Green Boats

DOEE and Living Classrooms hosts free weekly boating sessions, each session lasting up to 2 hours. These sessions are part of a citizen science program focused on collecting marine debris (typically plastic bottles) from the Anacostia River. After paddling and collecting the marine debris, we weigh, count, and measure the volume of the various types of trash collected during the session. The data from this program is used by the District government to inform policy and education focused on reducing litter that washes into the river. This program is funded by the Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Fund.
