Environmental Education

Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region's interdisciplinary shipboard and land-based education programs emphasize hands-on learning of academics and build the skills students need to be successful: creative problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. Our educational programs are designed to motivate students to explore and discover new concepts and create authentic learning experiences through real-world applications. Schools throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area utilize Living Classrooms' innovative, alternative educational curricula to supplement their existing classroom lessons. Most importantly, our programs are fun and inspire students to learn!
We offer several different types of programs to best fit your needs:
  • Bring your students on a field trip to one of our educational sites:
Kingman Island (NE Washington, D.C.) or Camp Fraser (Great Falls, VA), where students are presented with unique opportunities to explore a local watershed, experience hands-on lessons that meet DCPS Common Core Standards, and develop problem solving skills through team building and individual challenges on our low ropes course and rock climbing wall.
  • Invite us into your school to run supplemental environmental programming in your classroom or schoolyard.
  • Bring your students aboard our historic Chesapeake Bay Buy Boat, the Half Shell, to learn about water quality and local aquatic ecosystems in our Shipboard STEM programs.
  • Participate in a Park Outreach Program and bring up to 150 students to a local park to participate in a variety of interactive science-based learning stations that allow students to learn about the natural world in an organized, outdoor setting.
  • Participate in a Meaningful Watershed Education Experience program, which allows students of all ages and backgrounds to participate in real-world, hands-on environmental experiences.
  • Participate in a STEM program. We use a distinct fusion of music, hip-hop, art, writing, and literature to provide education to a diverse student body.

All lessons correlate with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core and State Standards. For more information on participating in any of these programs, please call 202-488-0627 x250.
