Virtual Maritime Education Reaches Three Cities and 700 Students this Winter

March 30, 2021

Due to the pandemic, our Maritime Education team reimagined our signature hands-on, environmental STEM education program that normally takes place aboard Lady MarylandSigsbee, and Mildred Belle, in order to reach students in their homes and assist teachers in preventing learning loss during remote learning. Since this time last year, our educators have developed a robust virtual maritime education program that has not only helped us serve students in the Maryland and Washington, DC, region but also students in locations that would normally be less likely to participate in person. This winter, which is considered off-season due to cold weather, we took our virtual program to seven Title I schools in Philadelphia and have 445 students.

The distance learning program includes a 90-minute live session with our educators, Living Classrooms Activity Boxes delivered for each student with all necessary supplies for guided hands-on experiments, complete watershed science curriculum and teacher resources, and supplemental videos and digital content.  In addition to our Philadelphia programming, our educators are working with students in Baltimore, DC, and surrounding counties that will total over 700 elementary and middle school students from the three cities by the end of the month.

Our educators are also serving the National Capital Region, working with 30 classes in ten schools thanks to funding from the Anacostia Watershed Society and by the end of the school year will provide virtual programming to roughly 900 students from Title I schools in Washington, DC. Our team is also working towards an ambitious goal of reaching 100% of the 20 schools located within the Baltimore Target Investment Zone by the end of the school year.

While we look forward to once again bringing students out on our education vessels (Lady Maryland, Sigsbee, and Mildred Belle) for in-person education programs, we are thrilled to be able to offer this virtual program to keep students engaged in learning while schools work towards long-term recovery from the pandemic.
