STEAM Activity Boxes Fight Learning Loss

April 20, 2020

Living Classrooms’ Education Department has responded to COVID-19 by creating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math) Activity Boxes to engage students with hands-on educational activities that can be done at home. All the directions and materials to engage in five or more lessons are contained within each box, along with links to supplemental instructional videos and resources.

The enclosed activities build on age-appropriate STEAM curriculum and do not require access to the internet to be fun and meaningful. Each box will also contain a bar of soap, instructions for effective hand washing, a science lesson about how handwashing destroys germs associated with viruses like the novel coronavirus, and packets of hand sanitizer. We are grateful to Maryland Packaging who has donated 50,000 small packets of hand sanitizer.

The STEAM Activity Boxes are available for students of different grade levels, from preschool through middle school, and will be distributed weekly to families at established meal distribution sites in both Baltimore and Washington, DC. We are projected to distribute at least 18,000 activity boxes between now and mid-June.
