June 24, 2020 – Today’s 101.9FM  – On June 19th, Gina Crash spoke on the phone with James Piper Bond, the President and CEO of Living Classrooms Foundation. The interview aired on Father’s Day and if you listen closely, you can hear James’ 2 year-old in the background while they both conducted the interview in their homes to adhere to social distance guidelines.

Founded in Baltimore in 1985, Living Classrooms Foundation is a Baltimore-Washington, DC nonprofit that disrupts the cycle of poverty and helps our community become safer, stronger and healthier by meeting individuals where they are and building skills for life. Living Classrooms inspires children, youth, and adults to achive their potential through hands-on education, workforce development, health and wellness , and violence prevention programming.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Living Classrooms continues to provide services from a distance to meet the needs of their families and to keep students engaged to prevent learning loss. They have pivoted their hands-on learning model to be relevant in the socially distant era.

Another result of the virus has been the early release of some non-violent offenders residing in local prison facilities. Living Classrooms’ Project SERVE has been working for years to assist returning citizens as they transition back into their lives. Living Classrooms also operates two Safe Streets sites in East Baltimore.

Royal Farms and Living Classrooms recently came together to supply food and beverages to 325 people who live in Perkins Homes, Baltimore’s second-largest public housing community.

Living Classrooms just kicked off a new effort in partnership with the Michael Phelps Foundation to deliver social-emotional wellness education to Baltimore City students during the summer.
