On Tuesday, November 20th Living Classrooms, together with our partners and supporters, marked the opening of the Patterson Park Youth Sports and Education Center powered by Under Armour. This $3.2 million capital project was funded thanks to the support of Dr. Andres Alonso and the Baltimore City Public Schools with the goal of providing students a safe, high quality education center, including a new 5,000 square foot education building and a beautiful artificial turf sport field, that will accommodate physical education, football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball through our Scholar Athlete Health & Wellness programming. More than 300 people joined us and heard wonderful speakers including two of our Crossroads students, Dr. Andres Alonso, Joe Ehrmann, City Council President Jack Young, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Congressman John Sarbanes, and Congressman Elijah Cummings. The Opening Ceremony highlights included a special play with City Springs football team conducting a flea-flicker play with Hall of Famer Lenny Moore passing to the young City Springs quarterback who then found Torrey Smith in the end zone for the first touchdown ever on this field. Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker kicked the first extra point. Baltimore Blast coach, Danny Kelly and Blast players scrimmaged with the Hampstead Hill girls soccer team, and professional Baltimore Bayhawks lacrosse players Alex Smith, Drew Westervelt, Dan Glading, and Ben Rubeor ran drills with middle schoolers. Orioles minor league players caught the first opening pitches from Friendship Academy students. The Patterson Park Youth Sports and Education Center will offer youth and families a safe place to learn, exercise, participate in physical education classes, and play sports. Living Classrooms staff will lead these health and wellness programs. This collaborative public/private project will deliver greatly needed school-day physical education programming for East Baltimore schools including the Scholar Athlete Health & Wellness program as an instrument for youth achievement by providing access and opportunities aimed at removing barriers to success, integrating academics, and empowering underserved youth to become their own agents of change. In addition to the field, there is a state-of-the-art computer learning station set-up in the new education building thanks to the support of Comcast and RTGX. The Sports and Education facility will now provide another incredible resource in the Children’s Target Investment Zone of East Baltimore. We are grateful to our partners, which include Baltimore City Public Schools, Department of Recreation & Parks, Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, Baltimore Ravens, Under Armour, Charlesmead Foundation, Comcast, Joseph & Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, and the Friends of Patterson Park.
