Ascend through Music is a Living Classrooms program operating at our UA House at Fayette community center located within the Baltimore Target Investment Zone. The program aims to uplift Baltimore City students academically, culturally, and spiritually, while promoting confidence, self-expression, and community awareness through music education.
Through hands-on experiences with instrumental lessons, vocal training, sound production, music ensembles, and song writing the program offers unique exposure to music history, technology, and the industry while also fostering leadership and creativity, which empowers students to succeed in their lives.
Through this exposure, students will cultivate a deep connection with music in their own lives, and gain the tools to be able express their culture, struggles, and triumphs through music. It is our hope that students will come away from the program seeing music as a way to uplift themselves as well as their community.
In 2015, several Baltimore City middle school students in the Ascend through Music program came together with many of the city's most popular musicians to record the song "Believe in Baltimore, " a plea for positive change in the wake of the riots.
All of the song's lyrics were written and sung by our students, with help from several local bands and artists including Future Islands, Lower Dens, and more. The video was shot and produced by 15Four.
One of the largest collaborations in the history of Baltimore's music scene, the project is the result of a partnership between our Ascend through Music program and WTMD.
