Celebrating the kickoff of year two of the “Game Changers” program November 5 at UA House in Baltimore are (L to R) Living Classrooms Foundation President and CEO James Piper Bond; middle school student Tony; Mayor’s Office of Human Services representative Sharita Thomas; Morgan Stanley Baltimore Complex Manager Scott Boylan; middle school student Nina; and Director of Park House with Living Classrooms Foundation Maritza Dominguez.

Baltimore, MD, November 5, 2018 - More than 125 East Baltimore elementary, middle and high school students attended the Game Changers year two kickoff November 5 at UA House at Fayette. Game Changers, managed by the Living Classrooms Foundation and sponsored by the Morgan Stanley Foundation, provides quality programming focused on keeping kids active and promoting a healthy lifestyle on days when Baltimore City Public Schools are closed.

During a brief ceremony, Living Classrooms Foundation President and CEO James Piper Bond, Morgan Stanley Baltimore Complex Manager Scott Boylan and Mayor’s Office of Human Services representative Sharita Thomas saluted and thanked students, parents and volunteers for continuing to make the program a success.

Launched in October 2017, Game Changers offers east Baltimore families wellness and sports programming as part of Morgan Stanley’s Healthy Cities Initiative, which fuels innovation by coordinating the resources that can strengthen a child’s healthy start to life. Breakout sessions for students cover physical and nutritional education, yoga and meditation, dance, and arts and crafts. Students are also served a healthy breakfast and lunch.

During the 2017-18 school year, Game Changers served more than 450 youth on 18 days when schools were closed. During those sessions, Living Classrooms staff welcomed more than 800 volunteers from Morgan Stanley and other Baltimore organizations to help manage Game Changers’ popular programs.

Game Changers is designed to expand the scope and scale of Living Classrooms’ existing initiatives to bring nutrition, fitness, and wellness education to a targeted area of east Baltimore known as the Target Investment Zone (TIZ).

Living Classrooms’ TIZ initiative is a strategic, comprehensive community effort to disrupt the cycle of generational poverty that concentrates on core education, workforce development, and health and wellness programs within an impoverished area of east Baltimore. The TIZ is home to 35,000 people, including 9,100 students in 18 schools, and more than 2,500 public housing units that span 122 acres. It encompasses the neighborhoods surrounding Patterson Park and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Oldtown/Middle East, the Fayette Street Corridor and McElderry Park.
