Teacher Professional Development Series with Masonville Cove

Calling all teachers!!  Our education team at Masonville Cove Urban Wildlife Refuge is hosting 4 FREE Professional Development Workshops for teachers this spring through funding received from the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE).  During each workshop, teachers will gain the confidence and tools to use the outdoors as a hands-on classroom to engage students in outdoor environmental education and increase environmental literacy.  Registration is required for each session: Email events@masonvillecove.org .

 

Schedule:

 

“Scientific Monitoring”

Saturday, April 17th | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Learn how to guide students in habitat, weather, and wildlife observations as well as abiotic water quality tests to gain a larger understanding of their environment.  All participants will receive an Earth Force Water Quality Monitoring Kit

 

“Tackling Trash”

Thursday, May 6th | 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Learn how to guide students in meaningful discussion and discovery of how trash and our waste impacts our communities, our watershed, and our world.  Each participant will receive a box of disposable gloves, a roll of trashbags, and a spring scale – all the supplies needed to lead students in environmental stewardship through a community/schoolyard clean-up.

 

“Planning and Planting a Native Pollinator Garden”

Saturday, May 15th | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Learn how to plan and plant a native pollinator garden and use it to extend classroom learning into the great outdoors. Participants will receive a set of pollinator plants for their lesson.

 

“Leaf Pack and Biotic Index Survey”

Saturday, June 5th | 10:00am – 12:00pm

Learn how to guide students in the experimental design of a leaf pack survey and biotic index to analyze stream ecology and health.
